A private plane carrying senior politician Madhav Rao Scindia of India's main opposition Congress Party crashed Sunday between New Delhi and the northern city of Kanpur, the nation's civil aviation minister said.

Shahnawaz Hussain told Zee News the plane carrying Scindia and eight other people left the Indian capital about 1:00 pm (0730 GMT) and was due to land one hour later at Kanpur.

Scindia, himself a former civil aviation minister, was due to address a public meeting in Kanpur, which was abruptly cancelled after news of the crash.

Scindia, a refined Oxford graduate and member of a former royal family, has often been viewed as an heir to Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi -- NEW DELHI (AFP)
