A senior official of the Damascus-based Palestinian opposition movement, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – General Command (PFLP-GC) has confirmed that Palestinian President Yasser Arafat and leader of the movement Ahmad Jibril will meet in Damascus during the upcoming visit of Arafat to Syria.

In a statement to Albawaba.com on Monday, member of the front’s central committee, Sami Sayyed, said that that “the awaited meeting comes within the framework of attempts made by both sides to reach an understanding in their relation,” noting that his movement has repeatedly met with Farouq Kaddoumi, head of the PLO Political Department during his visits to Damascus.

The PFLP-GC opposes the 1993 Oslo peace accords signed by the PLO and Israel.

However, Sayyed voiced his optimism over the meeting, accusing President Arafat of “retracting any agreement before the ink dries up on paper.”

“Arafat goes back on agreements, even those he reaches with his allies; he does not respect agreements and never values the opposite opinion” the official charged.

But according to Sayyed, the current circumstances in the Palestinian lands drives all Palestinian movements to reconsider their relationships.

On the other hand, the Palestinian official hailed the PNA-Syrian rapprochement, yet stressed that the consent that Jibril gave to meeting with Arafat was not due to pressures by Damascus on the movement.

The Palestinian President is scheduled to meet also with Nayef Hawatmeh, leader of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) and former speaker of the Palestinian National Council, Khaled Fahoum – Albawaba.com
