The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) on Sunday reached a final agreement on the formation of a new Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) in northern Iraq.
“[Discussions] took a long time, but the negotiations with the PUK and Gorran Movement resulted in a common understanding,” Nechirvan Barzani, the head of KRG said.
The KDP had reached an agreement with the Gorran Movement, the third party, for the establishment of the government before.
Following the agreements between the parties, a law will be enacted and the cabinet will be formed in order to activate the presidential office, which was first suspended in the parliament.

In the parliamentary elections held on 20 September 2018 in the KRG, 45 members of KDP, 21 members of PUK, 12 members of Gorran Movement, eight members of New Generation Movement, seven members of Islamic Society Party, five members of Islaha True Coalition, two members of Azadi and Modern Lists were elected to the parliament.
Five members of the Turkmen, who were subject to the quota system, and six members of the Christians were elected.
In October 2017, Iraqi federal forces seized Kirkuk province from Kurdish Peshmerga forces loyal to northern Iraq’s semi-autonomous KRG.
Home to large Turkmen, Kurdish and Arab communities, Kirkuk is one of several parts of Iraq disputed between Baghdad and the Erbil-based KRG.
