Speaker of the Iranian parliament, Mehdi Karubi, said on Tuesday he hoped the remaining five Iranian Jews still behind bars for spying for Israel could soon be released.

"I thank Hossein Ali Amiri, the prosecutor general (of Fars province), for his efforts in freeing our compatriots and I hope all the others will be released soon," Karubi told parliament in comments carried by state radio, according to AFP.

In July 2000 a revolutionary court in Shiraz sentenced ten Jews and two Muslim co-defendants to prison terms of between four and 13 years for running an Israeli spy ring.

Two of the Jews were released after serving reduced sentences, and last month three more Jews were freed under a pardon from supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The remaining five still in jail have also benefited from home leave. (Albawaba.com)
