Maryam Rajavi, the leader of the Iranian People's Mujahedeen movement, has been placed in detention in France, her lawyer Henri Leclerc said Sunday, according to AFP.
Rajavi, wife of Massoud Rajavi who is the opposition movement's military leader, had earlier been placed under judicial investigation by anti-terrorist judge Jean-Louis Bruguiere for conspiring with a "terrorist organization."
She was ordered detained Sunday after a two-hour hearing before a special judge who decides on the question of release or incarceration, and taken to prison.
Her lawyer reacted by saying she would appeal this decision.
French security officials claimed last week the People's Mujahedeen planned to make France its center of operations against Tehran after losing its bases in Iraq following the US-led victory there.
Maryam Rajavi was born in 1953 to a middle class family in Tehran. She has a daughter (born in 1982) and a degree in metallurgical engineering.
Rajavi became acquainted with the anti-shah movement in 1970. After entering Sharif University of Technology in Tehran to pursue her education, she quickly became a leader of the student movement and joined the People's Mujahedeen.
