Iran's main armed opposition group, the Iraqi-based People's Mujahedeen, fired three shells close to the western border city of Mehran early Sunday, newspapers reported Monday.
The attack on a public place in Ilam province left no damages or casualties, papers said.
(In a statement faxed to AFP in Nicosia, the group said it had fired mortars at the Hossein-Abad garrison, headquarters of the 21st Hamzeh division's commando battalion east of Mehran.
"Heavy casualties and damages were inflicted on the enemy forces", the statement said.)
The Mujahedeen regularly claim attacks inside the Islamic republic, and their presence in Iraq is a stumbling block to the normalization of relations between Tehran and Baghdad, who have not signed a peace treaty after their 1980-1988 war.
In late November, Iran's intelligence ministry announced it had arrested a Mujahedeen team in the western Lorestan province.
According to the report, the team had "intended to create unrest" in the city of Borujerd on November 11 -- the birthday of Shiite Islam's 12th imam, believed to be the messiah who will return to establish justice on earth.
