Palestinians were streaming to the center of the West Bank city of Ramallah to express support for their president's move to win U.N. recognition of a Palestinian state.
Mahmoud Abbas is to address the U.N. General Assembly later this week and request full U.N. membership.
This comes as Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman vowed to respond to the Palestinian bid. "The Palestinian initiative will not go without a response from Israel, but I don't think that any more details should be given," Lieberman told Israel's army radio in a phone interview from New York.
"We must see how things evolve with the process in which the Palestinians are engaged, we have sufficient tools to respond," he added.
