ALBAWABA - In a statement released earlier, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry saluted the Libyan government for reiterating its refusal to normalize ties with Israel.
This statement comes after Interim Prime Minister of Libya Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh officially dismissed foreign minister Najla al-Mangoush over a "secret meeting" with the Israeli foreign minister.
Dbeibeh also paid a visit to the Palestinian Embassy in Tripoli to reaffirm his government's support for the Palestinian resistance to Israeli occupation.
The statement reads: "he reiterated his absolute support for the Palestinian people in their legitimate quest to regain their full rights and for the establishment of their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital,".
Libya's normalization with Israel
According to Israel's announcement of the meeting, the two parties discussed possible cooperation, including Israeli aid in humanitarian issues, agriculture, and water management.
Israel’s Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, citing unnamed Israeli officials, said the meeting was “coordinated at the highest level” between the two countries and took place with the knowledge of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Anadolu News Agency reported.
This meeting prompted a number of protests across the city of Zawiya, where protestors burned the Israeli flag to voice their opposition against the diplomatic engagement.
Similarly, in Tajoura, to the east of Tripoli, protestors blocked a main street in, rejecting the meeting between the Libyan Foreign Minister and her Israeli counterpart.
