Israeli forces on Monday shot and killed a Palestinian man in East Jerusalem after an alleged stabbing attempt on border police officers, Israeli police said.

Israeli police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld said the suspect pulled out a knife at officers and was shot dead at the scene.

The incident occurred near Lion's Gate, with the area closed off afterwards.

Israeli news site the Times of Israel reported that border police asked a Palestinian man to take his hands out of his pockets after becoming suspicious, at which point the suspect attempted to attack the officer, hitting his protective vest.

The attacker was then shot multiple times.

Palestinian witnesses told Ma'an that there was no attempted stabbing at the time of the shooting, and the man was killed as he was walking in the area.

The suspect was identified as Mustafa Adel al-Khatib.

The latest death brings the total number of Palestinians killed to 25 since the beginning of October.
