A difficult night passed for the people of Gaza. While Israeli aircraft killed Wednesday, one of the military leaders of the Islamist movement Hamas , a wave of air strikes by Israeli forces was carried out in the Gaza Strip. This latest campaign of airstrikes that killed at least 11 people , according to the Palestinians, was triggered after an Egyptian-mediated truce was almost achieved following five days of violence.

Violence continued this morning with a new Israeli airstrike that killed three Palestinian militants. Over 100 wounded since Wednesday afternoon when Israel declared Operation "Pillar of Defense".

The Security Council of the United Nations met for an emergency session last night to discuss the Israeli raids against the Gaza Strip. No decision has been made. The United States has strongly supported Israel's military response to the attacks of Hamas.

Faced with the escalating tensions, US president Barack Obama spoke by phone Wednesday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi. U.S. President reaffirmed Israel's right to self-defense.

Egypt has recalled its ambassador to Israel. The Arab League is scheduled to meet in Cairo on Saturday. Several European countries have called on the parties to avoid the escalation of violence.
