Pakistan will undertake its first economic census to collect comprehensive data on all aspects of economic activity from the grass-roots level upwards, an official report said Monday.

The survey will be lauched from March and completed within two years at a cost of 150 million rupees (2.5 million dollars), the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan said.

The information gathered in the census will help economic planners and meet a long-standing demand of international financial institutions, it added.

It quoted a Bureau of Statistics official as saying the government expected cooperation from the country's traders, who strongly opposed a national tax survey last year.

A series of meetings with representatives of chambers of commerce and industry are planned in March ahead of the launch of the economic census, officials told the agency -- ISLAMABAD (AFP)
