Oman and the United Arab Emirates are discussing the prospect of launching defense cooperation, reported the Middle East Newsline (MENL) on Sunday.
Officials said the talks marked the first serious effort at defense cooperation between the two Gulf neighbors.
Both countries deploy militaries based on Western-made weapons, particularly those from the US.
Envoys of the two countries met last Wednesday to discuss prospects for joint exercises and training, said MENL.
The UAE was represented by Sultan Bin Mohammed Qasimi, ruler of Sharjah and a member of the emirates' supreme council.
Qasimi met Omani Defense Minister Badr Bin Saud Busaidy and the two discussed a range of cooperation issues, the Omani News Agency reported.
On Monday, the Gulf Cooperation Council meets in the Bahraini capital of Oman. GCC leaders are expected to discuss regional security as well plans to expand the Jezirah Shield force, said the news service – Albawaba.com
