Oman detains citizen for ‘spreading rumors’ about government

A citizen was detained for spreading rumors about the issuance of a royal decree on cabinet reshuffle, a source at the Royal Oman Police (ROP) said.

The rumor has been circulating on social networking sites and smart phone apps. The citizen was referred to the competent authorities to decide on his case as determined by the laws.

Addressing the rumours

The move is part of the Government’s efforts to curb the rumours and put an end to any impudence on the state’s institutions and the exploitation of such means to broadcast negative messages contrary to the values of society and public order.

Utmost firmness

The official source affirmed that the authorities will not hesitate to adopt utmost firmness against such irresponsible behaviors, urging everyone to verify and make sure before embarking on the publication or circulation of any data or messages via those means and applications due to the negative impact resulting from such rumors and incorrect news on the society.
