Jordan and Syria are expected to ink a free trade agreement (FTA) by the end of the month, a Jordanian trade and industry official said Sunday.

Samer Al Tawil, secretary general at the ministry of trade and industry, told the Gulf Times that the agreement should be reached by the end of September at the next Jordanian-Syrian higher committee meeting in Amman.

The committee is chaired by the two countries' prime ministers.

Amman and Damascus signed a trade agreement in 1975, but it is not compatible with new commercial laws and the exigencies of the World Trade Organization (WTO), which Jordan joined last year, Tawil said.

The US Senate is expected to ratify an FTA with Jordan this fall – Albawaba.com
