An Army patrol inspecting a metal barrel containing landmines on Lebanon’s northern border came under fire from Syrian territory Monday, the state-run National News Agency reported, causing no casualties.

The container was found outside the town of al-Haysha near the Kabir river which demarcates Lebanon's northern border with Syria.

A security source said that the landmines most likely belonged to the Syrian army, which is beefing up security by planting mines along the border.

It was unknown who fired on the Army patrol, the NNA said.
