ALBAWABA- North Korean leader Kim Jong Un promised full support for Russia’s war in Ukraine during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Pyongyang on Wednesday. The leaders discussed expanding economic and military cooperation and presenting a united front against the United States.
Putin expressed gratitude for North Korea's support, announcing plans for a new agreement to enhance their partnership in opposition to "imperialist hegemonistic policies of the U.S. and its satellites."
This visit marks Putin’s first trip to North Korea in 24 years, and he emphasized the historical ties between the two nations, dating back to Soviet support during the Korean War.
There are growing concerns about a potential arms deal where North Korea would supply Russia with munitions for its war in Ukraine in exchange for economic aid and technology transfers.
These developments could heighten the threat posed by North Korea’s nuclear weapons and missile program.
Despite heavy U.N. sanctions on North Korea for its nuclear activities and U.S. sanctions on Russia for its actions in Ukraine, both nations are seeking to strengthen their alliance. Kim expressed optimism about the future of their relationship, hoping for a "monolithic" friendship.
North Korea, often isolated internationally, has historically maintained deep, though fluctuating, relations with Russia and China. However, in recent decades, Pyongyang has heavily relied on China for trade. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has prompted Putin to shift his approach towards stronger ties with North Korea.
