A leading nightclub in Dubai has been closed down by the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) for "violating Islamic laws and indulging in immoral activities," reported the Gulf News on Sunday.

The Diamond Club was ordered closed by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, DTCM Chairman.

A DTCM spokesman said in a statement that "following an order issued by Gen. Sheikh Mohammed, the Diamond Nightclub has been shut down for violating the Islamic laws of the country and indulging in immoral activities in contradiction with the laws of Dubai."

Diamond Club General Manager Shyam Lala confirmed the nightclub had been closed, but refused to comment further when contacted by the paper.

Industry sources, however, said the action had been taken because the club hosted a "gay night" last month which featured a transvestite DJ from the UK – Albawaba.com
