New casualty toll for quake in Iran

A total of 235 people were killed and 1,300 wounded in the earthquake, which hit northwest Iran on June 22, the interior ministry announced Sunday, updating the casualty toll.  

 

"The number of dead is 235 -- 226 in Qazvin province, four in Hamedan and five in Zanjan," Abbas Jazayeri, head of the ministry's natural disaster department, told reporters, according to AFP.  

 

The number of wounded was 1,300, he added, saying that 9,500 houses and public buildings were destroyed. The number of people left homeless, according to different sources, is estimated at between 12,500 and 20,000.  

 

The earthquake, which registered 6.3 on the Richter scale had its epicenter in the south of Qazvin province, some 250 kilometers from the capital of Tehran. (Albawaba.com)
