NDP Wins 14 of 19 Seats in Egypt's First-Stage Shura Council Elections

The National Democratic Party (NDP) won 14 out of 19 seats in the Shura Council run-off mid-term elections in five governorates last Wednesday, reported Egypt.online on Wednesday. 

The governorates are Giza, Qalubiya, Beheira, Beni Sweif and Fayoum.  

Forty candidates took part in the elections, which took place in 13 constituencies in five governorates.  

Contesting the elections were 20 candidates from the NDP and 20 independent candidates. 

The 264-seat Shura Council is a consultative body that serves as an upper house. 

According to the constitution, there should be no less than 132 members, two thirds of them elected by secret ballot, while the remaining third is appointed by the president.
