Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah met Tuesday with Defense Minister Samir Moqbel as the minister holds a series of talks with high-ranking political officials after his return from Tehran late last month.
According to a statement released by Hezbollah’s media office, the two discussed “the latest political and security developments in Lebanon and the region.”
Hezbollah’s top security official, Wafiq Safa, also joined the meeting, the statement said.
Moqbel has been meeting with high-ranking political officials in Lebanon ever since he returned from a three-day official visit to Iran late last month, where he discussed the Iranian offer of military aid to the Lebanese Army.
Moqbel met with Prime Minister Tammam Salam, Army commander Gen. Jean Kahwagi and former President Michel Sleiman over the pledged aid last month. He has also met with Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun and Kataeb Party chief Amine Gemayel.
Although the Lebanese government had announced that it welcomed any unconditional support to the Army, the Iranian aid has sparked some controversy, with local and international figures saying that it would be a violation of U.N. sanctions on Iran.
According to sanctions applied in March 2007, Iran is forbidden to sell, export or move any weapons from its territory to other countries.
Lebanese figures also called for refusing the aid because of Iran’s involvement in supporting Hezbollah and unofficial reports that the U.S. opposes the acceptance of such a donation.
