ALBAWABA - Myanmar's junta revealed that it will be holding elections on December 28, AFP reported on Monday.
According to sources, the elections are the first since the fall of the old regime, headed by Aung San Suu Kyi, who served as State Counsellor of Myanmar and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2016 to 2021.
After the military in Myanmar took control of the government, a civil war erupted in the country, killing thousands of people.
It is worth noting that a great area of Myanmar is beyond military control and is run by a "myriad of pro-democracy guerrillas and powerful ethnic armed organisations," AFP maintained.
The civil war left more than half the nation in poverty and forced over 3.5 million others into displacement.
At present, Min Aung Hlaing is the acting president of Myanmar, and he is also serving as the chief of the armed forces, which has ruled the country during its post-independence history.
