An appeals court in Kuwait granted bail on Monday to a leading opposition figure convicted of insulting the ruling emir, reports say.
Former MP, Mussallam al-Barrak, was sentenced to five years in jail last week for remarks made at an opposition rally in October. He was not taken into custody.
According to Reuters, Barrak's lawyer, Dokki Al Hasban, said the court ruled on Monday that Barrak should be released on bail of 5,000 dinars ($17,600) and that his defense team would have a chance to argue his case next month.
Opposition supporters gathered outside the court responded to the decision with cheers.
Barrak's case has already prompted street protests, some of which have led to clashes between his supporters and police.
