A federal appeals court will hear arguments Monday on US President Donald Trump's ban on travellers from six Muslim-majority countries.

There was no timetable for the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia, to rule in the case.

The Trump administration is appealing a Maryland judge's March 16 decision to block implementation of a presidential order to impose a 90-day ban on issuing new entry documents to people from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

US District Judge Theodore Chuang said the plaintiffs were likely to win eventual adjudication of their claim that the order violates the US Constitution's ban on religious discrimination because the six countries affected are each overwhelmingly Muslim.

A federal judge in Hawaii issued a similar but broader restraining order against Trump's policy in a separate lawsuit. That case halted implementation of the entire executive order, which also sought to halt issuances of new refugee admissions from around the world for 120 days.

An earlier version of Trump's order was blocked in February by federal courts.

The White House has argued that immigration law gives the president sweeping power to block entry to the United States.
