Jerusalem's highest Islamic religious leader Mufti Ekrema Sabri has come out in support of the establishment of a supreme Muslim council for the estimated one million Muslims in Palestinian towns in Israel.

According to Iran News Agency (IRNA), Sabri said in a radio interview Saturday that the idea of creating such a council is ripe now in light of pressing need for a body to care for the Palestinians living under the Israeli domination.

He argued that pre-1967 Palestinians were qualified and able to supervise their own religious and other affairs, which might necessitate the creation of a supreme council, added IRNA.

Currently, most of the religious affairs of Muslims in pre-1967 Palestine are dealt with by the Muslim Waqf officials in eastern Jerusalem - Albawaba.com.
