Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Tuesday urged Baghdad to take account of the "seriousness of the situation" and accept the new UN disarmament resolution in order to avert a war.
"It is important for Iraq to realize the seriousness of the situation, that it accept the UN Security Council resolution, and that it allow the arms inspectors to undertake their mission without obstacles," Mubarak said in remarks published by Egypt's state-run news agency MENA.
"That's what I told Iraqi Foreign Minister Naji Sabri, whom I received on Sunday, and who gave assurances that Iraq did not have nuclear or other weapons" banned by UN resolutions dating from the 1991 Gulf War, the Egyptian leader said.
"If a military attack is launched against Iraq, everybody will be affected and that will lead to terrorist actions," he warned. Mubarak stated that he was "in permanent contact with US President George W. Bush and deploying intensive efforts to spare the region from the dangers of military action." (Albawaba.com)
