Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak said Friday that political and economic reform is needed to modernize his country.

Mubarak's comments, delivered in a speech read by his information minister, came at the opening of his ruling party's annual conference, which is expected to present new plans to reform Egypt.

"Our meeting this year will be the first real test of our dedication to reform and modernize," Mubarak said.

The conference is also providing a stage for Gamal Mubarak, the president's 39-year-old son who some regard as the next Egyptian leader, to unveil his visions regarding political, social and economic issues.

Gamal, named by his father as head of a party policy-making committee, is inclined to present papers on the economy, foreign policy and democratization. (Albawaba.com)
