Both sons of the deposed Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will stand for a trial on new corruption charges on July 9, reported Tuesday the official news agency MENA. Judge Abdel Moez Ibrahim was quoted as saying that Gamal and Alaa Mubarak would be tried on July 9 with seven others in a criminal court for a corruption case related to the Egyptian Stock Exchange.
President Mubarak was sentenced on June 2 to life imprisonment for his role in the killing of demonstrators during the revolt against his regime in early 2011. The repression of this revolt saw about 850 dead.
His two sons, tried with him for corruption, have been acquitted.
The upcoming trial will include charges over the sale of Bank Al-Watany. According to the prosecution, the defendants had decided to acquire the majority shares in several banks through front companies without declaring it on the stock exchange, according to MENA news agency, indicating that they had secured about US$300 million and then transferred it abroad .
Gamal, 48, former head of the powerful political committee of the ruling party under Mubarak, was tipped to succeed his father. This fueled anger among many quarters and helped to the outbreak of the revolt against Mubarak.
Alaa, the eldest son, was not involved in politics but was rumored to amass a fortune thanks to his father's connections. Both sons are still being held in a Cairo prison.
