Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak said he is to dispatch two envoys to Israel and the Palestinian territories on a mission to ease tensions in the region.
"I will soon send a peace envoy to Israel and another to the Palestinian Authority because the situation cannot go on the way it is, and I fear that future complications could lead the whole region to chaos," he told reporters Monday.
"There has to be a mechanism for implementation," he said. "The two parties have obligations to meet and there must be a committee to work out the means to implement" Bush's proposals. Mubarak declared he had never discussed an alternative to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat with the US administration, which wants him ousted.
"This question was never raised during my (June) visit to the United States and nobody spoke to me about it because our point of view on the subject is clear and well-known," he said, denying any coordination with Washington.
Mubarak also urged Bush to make clear how he plans to implement his vision for Mideast peace.
"I would wish that the administration move to explain what is ambiguous in (Bush's) statement to avoid interpretations that may contradict or undermine it," Mubarak said. "There must be a committee, or a step after President Bush's statement that clarifies how to put it in action." Mubarak also said Israel must stop its incursions into Palestinian territories.
"What we also demand is that raids, strikes, destruction and humiliation should be stopped, otherwise no mechanism can work," Mubarak said. (Albawaba.com)
