Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has vowed to implement a constitutional amendment which would remove some restrictions on parties aiming at fielding candidates in presidential elections.
"A total change of the constitution is difficult but an ammendment to certain articles is possible," Mubarak told a meeting of MPs from his ruling National Democratic Party, according to AFP. "I thought about ammending article 76 before you did, in order to strenghten parties," he said.
Meanwhile, he said his country would announce a tender to build a nuclear power plant. Mubarak, who will be visiting Russia early November, told a Russian daily, Vremya Novosti, in its edition published on Monday, that Egypt "is still considering such a project and has not come to a final decision yet."
Egypt's oil reserves will last for 14 years and gas reserves will last for 34 years, said Mubarak. But the industrial development needs alternative fuel sources, he added.
