Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak telephoned Tuesday morning Israel’s Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon to request he meet with Egyptian intelligence chief Gen. Omar Suleiman. The Egyptian envoy is expected to arrive in Israel and the PA areas in a few days, Israel Radio reported.

Egypt wants to continue security meetings with the Palestinian Authority and Israel which began two weeks ago.

Mubarak's request came a day after the Egyptian leader met with Israel’s Defense Minister and Labor leader Benjamin Ben-Eliezer in Alexandria. After the talks, Mubarak was critical of Sharon, saying that he had conversed with him just once, on the telephone, for about 90 seconds. "How can things move forward this way?" he asked.

During the phone conversation, Mubarak stressed to Sharon the urgent need to "end the sufferings of the Palestinian people."

He referred to "the tragic situation of the Palestinian people because of the blockade of Palestinian cities in the West Bank" and called for the lifting of curbs on Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, Egypt's state MENA news agency said Tuesday. (Albawaba.com)
