Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi said on Saturday that President Assad and his government had no place in Syria's future, Reuters reported on Saturday.

The Egyptian president put his weight behind the Syrian opposition, saying he supported the revolution although it was still his priority to halt the violence.

Speaking in a televised speech to Egypt's constitutional council, Morsi said he wanted "the Syrian people to replace the current regime" with elected leaders.

"The revolution of the Syrian people, which we support, will go forward, God willing, to realise its goals of freedom, dignity and social justice," Morsi added.

President Morsi came to power in Egypt following the revolution of 2011, which saw former dictator, Hosni Mubarak, ousted from government.
