Morocco's King Mohammed VI and the country's foes in the occupied Western Sahara on Tuesday both announced measures to release prisoners to mark the Muslim feast of Eid al-Adha.

The Moroccan king gave total pardons or reduced prison terms and fines for a total of 1,081 convicts, while four others saw their life prison sentences reduced to shorter ones, Morocco's news agency said.

Separately, the Polisario Front movement seeking the independence of the Western Sahara, announced through the Sahrawi news agency SPS, the release of 100 Moroccan prisoners of war.

"This release follows the intervention of Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar", SPS said, quoting a Polisario Front statement. (Albawaba.com)
