The Moroccan government has asked the private sector to participate in dam buildings, said reports.

The move was considered after recent heavy rain which have increased water levels in the Moroccan dams for farming usage.

The ministry of agriculture, rural development, water and forests was quoted by Morocco’s official news agency (MAP) as saying “this year’s level is higher that the volume recorded last year when dams were filled to 41% of their capacity.”

The increase has reinforced hopes of a good cereal harvest and consequent strong overall growth in an economy still dominated by agriculture, which accounts for 50 percent of employment and between 15 percent and 20 percent of GDP.

On the other hand, the government of Morocco was reported to involve private sector in dam building.

According to the Upline Securities, the public works ministry is considering ways to involve the private sector in Morocco's dam construction program, which is aiming to complete three dams per year, in order to reduce budgetary pressure.

Options under study include the contracting-out of the design, construction, or management of dams; the financing of dam construction by the private sector through a combination of state subsidies and contributions by water and electricity consumers; and the creation of a National Dam Fund, it added – Albawaba.com
