Moroccan City of El Jadida on UNESCO's World Heritage List

The Moroccan city of El Jadida recently appeared on the UNESCO's world heritage list. <i>Le Matin</i> reported Thursday that this city has been just added to the six other Moroccan cities listed in UNESCO's world heritage. Known formerly under the name Mazagan and then El Jadida, the city is located in the center of Morocco, on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. EL Jadida (Mazagan) was built by the Portuguese between 1510 and 1520, and it was taken over by Moroccans in 1769. The name of El Jadida was given to the city by the Sultan Moulay Mohammed Ben Abdellah. UNESCO notes that EL Jadida is an outstanding example of the interchange between European and Moroccan cultures, which is reflected in its architecture.
