At least 29 people have died after a string of car bombs hit largely Shiite areas of Baghdad on Monday morning.

Eight car bombs rippled through the capital wounding more than 100 people, according to Iraqi police and medics who spoke to the BBC.

According to initial police reports, the bombs were concealed in parked cars and hit markets and car parks in at least seven areas of the city, including the Shia area of Sadr City.

This year has been one of the deadliest since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, with sectarian violence killing over 700 people in July alone
