The Israeli army has made preparations to cope with any possible terror attack against Israel by Osama bin Laden, the main suspect in the terror attacks on the US, said Israeli chief of general staff Shaul Mofaz on Sunday.

"The army has taken a number of steps to improve its readiness in all areas in the last year. I think the State of Israel and the Israeli populace can rest assured that the [Israeli army] has and is taking all the necessary steps," Mofaz said, cited by the Jerusalem Post.

Although he acknowledged there had been a drop in “Palestinian terror attacks in recent days,” Mofaz said he did not see any wide-ranging moves to thwart shooting and terror attacks, according to the paper.

He said Israel was operating as a behind-the-scenes partner in the coalescing US-led coalition, and that for the moment, that situation was best served that way.

US Secretary of State Collin Powell ruled out last week any Israeli participation in a US-led coalition to combat terrorism.

Since then, however, there have been reports that Israel might allow the US to use its airspace – Albawaba.com
