ALBAWABA - Numerous drones and missiles have attacked a US military installation in Syria, raising concerns about possible casualties.

Explosions were reported close to the American facility in the Al-Omar field, east of Deir ez-Zor, a secret source told Al Jazeera. Meanwhile, two Iraqi security officials told Reuters that on Sunday, at least five rockets were fired towards a US military installation in northeastern Syria from the Iraqi town of Zummar.

Furthermore, five missiles fired from Mosul's northwest towards the American outpost at the Kharab al-Jir facility in Syria were revealed by an Iraqi security source.

Up to five rockets were reportedly launched from neighbouring Iraq, and explosions were audible close to the US military installation in the Al-Omar field, east of Deir Ezzor.

The incident occurs at a time when regional tensions are high due to recent conflicts between Israel and Iran. The unstable scenario was even worse last week when Iran launched a drone and missile retaliation strike.

Local sources have indicated that there have been casualties on the American installation, namely in the vehicle hangars at the Kharab al-Jir location.

According to reports, a combination of drones and missiles were used in the attack, which prompted an American security alert in the area around the base.

This incident is the first strike on US forces since groups in Iraq connected with Iran stopped attacking US military personnel in early February.

Unconfirmed claims also exist of a second missile attack that was aimed at the Syrian Democratic Forces in Khadra, East Deir Ez-Zor, close to the Al-Omar oil field. As authorities evaluate the magnitude of the damage and possible casualties, the situation is still unstable.
