Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources Mahmoud Abu Zeid said Wednesday his country could help Ethiopia deal with drought and famine that threatens at least 11 million people with starvation next year.
"Egypt is entirely ready to offer technical and material aid to Ethiopia to deal with the drought," Abu Zeid was quoted as saying by MENA news agency.
He spoke during a meeting with Sudanese and Ethiopian counterparts Kamal Ali Mohamed and Shiferaw Jarso devoted to joint development projects in the Nile River basin.
The Egyptian minister said Cairo had accepted an Ethiopian request for help drilling wells in western areas of the country.
In addition, Abu Zeid said African water ministers would meet in the Egyptian capital of Cairo between February 5-6, and that delegates from Nile river countries would hold talks on the sidelines of that event as well. (Albawaba.com)
