Oasis Sprl, the Congolese operation of Millicom International Cellular, has awarded Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. (“Huawei”), a leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, a turnkey contract to provide a brand new GSM network. Under the first phase of the contract, Huawei will supply and install its leading edge Huawei EnerG GSM technical platform and deploy more than 500 base stations across the country.

The state-of-the-art network will offer quality voice communication as well as high speed Internet, video on demand, MMS, electronic payments and other attractive features. Millicom DRC will be launching the network with a capacity of over one million subscribers with a new brand name in the third quarter of this year. The initial phase of the network will cover 85 per cent the population in the largest 182 cities of the Congo.

The Huawei EnerG GSM platform introduces 3G and new technologies to enhance GSM performance. The platform is small in size but features a large capacity and supports multiple RF technologies and efficiently improves network performance. It also decreases the  cost of network construction and operations and maintenance expenditure. The solution provides for smooth evolution to GERAN and UMTS enabling 3G-like service while protecting the existing network investment.

“It’s a milestone occasion for both companies,” said Gaël Campan, Oasis Sprl CEO. “Millicom and Huawei’s collaboration will open a new era for the cell phone industry in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The country is a pioneer in the mobile industry and deserves the highest standard of product quality and services. Our partnership with Huawei will enable us to create a more competitive market for better customer satisfaction.”

“Huawei is honored to become Millicom DRC’s partner offering a future-proof network and enriched communication experiences to DRC subscribers”, said Mr. Jingwen Tao, President of Huawei South Africa. “We look forward to a close long-term partnership with Millicom DRC. With our vision of enriching people’s life through communications, Huawei is committed to bringing excellent services and world-class innovative technologies to benefit DRC customers.”

Due to Huawei’s continuous investment and innovation in GSM, over 100 million global subscribers are being served by Huawei EnerG GSM solution. Massive commercial implementations have been deployed in more than 60 countries. Series of Huawei GSM BTSs have been applied over 500 thousand TRXs.
