Reuters reports that militants attacked two energy facility in northern Iraq on Sunday morning, killing at least four workers.
According to security sources, the AB2 gas compressor station, northwest of Kirkuk, was attacked at 3am local time. Four gunmen with explosives broke through the exterior door, critically wounding two guards in the process. The attackers shot and killed four workers in the control room and detonated explosives in the building.
Iraqi counter-terrorism forces arrived at the facility shortly after, and rescued 15 other workers who had taken shelter in another room. The gas compressor station was secured, but the attackers escaped.
Another attack, suspected to be lead by the same group of militants, struck the Bai Hassan oil station, 25km northwest of the gas compressor station.
According to Reuters, the Bai Hassan attack followed the same structure as the previous one. Militants destroyed an oil storage tank on the site. Security forces are fighting with the militants at the location.
The fighting is ongoing.
While no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, Daesh has previously detonated explosives at an oilfield southwest of Kirkuk.
