The Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) will continue to validate its operation plans through a series of national, regional and international sports competitions to be held in May and June 2010 before Singapore welcomes the first-ever Youth Olympic Games (YOG).
Over 700 athletes from more than 30 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) will gather in Singapore in May and June to compete in ten sports, namely Archery, Athletics, Basketball, Canoe-Kayak, Cycling - BMX and Mountain Bike, Gymnastics, Rowing, Tennis, Volleyball and Weightlifting.
The competitions include the Athletics Asian qualifier for Singapore 2010 and feature new competition formats such as 3-on-3 Basketball, Head-to-Head Canoe Sprint and Obstacle Canoe Slalom on flat water and BMX.
Organised by the respective National Sports Associations (NSAs), the competitions will closely simulate scenarios during Singapore 2010. Through these competitions, SYOGOC will take the opportunity to validate and fine-tune its Games-time operations plan.
Interested members of public can catch these competitions at new or upgraded venues such as *SCAPE, Tampines Bike Park and Toa Payoh Sports Hall. Admission is free for the public.
“We are now entering the final leg of preparations for the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games. The validation exercises will further ensure that we are operationally ready for the Games. At the same time, we would like to encourage the public to participate and immerse themselves in the exciting sports atmosphere by catching athletes in action at the pre-Games competitions,” said Mr GOH Kee Nguan, Chief Executive Officer of SYOGOC.
SYOGOC has been carrying out a series of validation exercises since June 2009 to finetune its operational plans and train the officials and volunteers. The most recent series of validation exercises concluded successfully in January this year at the International Convention Centre.
