The leader of the opposition Sudanese Umma Party, Al Sadeq Al Mahdi, asserted on Sunday that the Egyptian-Libyan initiative was the best option for restoring national unity in Sudan, reported Kuwait’s news agency (KUNA).
Al Mahdi, speaking at a news conference at the end of a visit to Doha where he met the Qatari emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, said the initiative needed some modifications to render it more effective.
He called for setting a timetable for the implementation of the peace plan and urged the leaders of the southern Sudanese rebels to take part in the national conciliation process.
Egypt and Libya have proposed a national reconciliation dialogue to end Sudan’s protracted crises, which have been marked by internal armed conflicts and famine. Al Mahdi said he planned to travel to the US in June to hold talks with officials on possible means to resolve the Sudanese crisis, said the agency.
The opposition leader indicated that he was not against inviting the chief of the southern rebels, George Garang, to Doha if "this would help in resolving the Sudanese problem.” – Albawaba.com
