ALBAWABA - The M23 group, who entered the city of Goma and controlled it after days of fighting against the army in DR Congo, announced on Monday to stop the fire "unilaterally" for humanitarian reasons.
According to The Guardian, the UN health agency revealed that at least 900 people were killed amid clashes and fighting between the M23 rebels and DR Congo forces in Goma city.
The M23 rebels confirmed that the unilateral ceasefire would come into effect on Tuesday.
M23 rebel spokesman Lawrence Kanyuka announced: "It must be made clear that we have no intention of capturing Bukavu or other areas. However, we reiterate our commitment to protecting and defending the civilian population and our positions."
UN experts estimated that the M23 rebels are backed by about 4,000 soldiers from Rwanda.
It is worth noting that in 2012, M23 rebels took control of Goma city, but they withdrew after an agreement brokered by neighbouring countries. On Jan. 27, 2025, forces announced reentering the city as they are backed by Rwandan forces.
