After 10 months of legal proceedings, the ousted Egyptian president on Saturday was sentenced to life imprisonment. Hosni Mubarak, who had pleaded not guilty, was accused of complicity in murder and premeditated murder of 846 protesters, killed by the security forces in the uprising during January - February 2011 that led to his resignation.

Mubarak and his two sons, Gamal and Alaa, were also tried for corruption and embezzlement of public funds but were acquitted by the court. Both men had tears in their eyes after reading the verdicts.

Hosni Mubarak was present in court, lying on a stretcher because of his health.

Former Interior Minister Habib el-Adli has also been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Brief clashes broke out after reading the verdicts outside the building but also inside the courtroom.

"Void! Null and void! ", " The people want the purge of justice!", lawyers shouted, furious after the acquittal of six security officials and the announcement of dropping charges against Alaa and Gamal Mubarak.State television, which broadcast the hearing live, showed pictures of a young man bleeding while others exchanged blows.

The hearing was held under tight security. Hundreds of riot police and army tanks surrounded the building to prevent the clashes that occurred repeatedly in the past in front of the building between pro and anti Mubarak activists.
