Zimbabwe has deported a former Libyan embassy intelligence officer on charges that he was spying for Britain and assisting the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, papers reported Friday.

Under heavy security, Yousef Murgham was placed aboard a flight to Tripoli, Libya, via Nairobi and Cairo.

The state-run daily, The Herald, cited a security source that said Murgham "had become an undesirable element by engaging in activities threatening the interests of the country". The newspaper said he had threatened on Thursday to blow up the Air Zimbabwe plane, which he boarded to Kenya from where he was to connect to Egypt and then to Tripoli, AFP said.

Murgham reportedly served as counselor at the Libyan embassy in Harare from 1987 till 1993 and still held a valid local residence permit. The Herald also alleged that the former diplomat was currently "working closely with British intelligence and the opposition MDC (Movement for Democratic Change)".

The paper further alleged that Murgham was trying to "scupper oil deals" between Libya and Zimbabwe. (Albawaba.com)
