The Libyan Coast Guard announced on Monday that they rescued 111 migrants off the eastern coast of Tripoli.

Col. Ayub Gasem, a spokesman for the coast guard, said the guards spotted a single boat full of people and went to their rescue.

The migrants were mostly Malian. Mali is facing extreme economic hardship and a growing al-Qaeda presence, so thousands are leaving the country to attempt to travel to Europe.

After arriving back ashore, the Coast Guard passed the 111 people to the Illegal Migration Combat Authority to process their documents. The Red Crescent authorities were also present, offering humanitarian assistance to anyone who needed specific aid.
