Libyan and Ukrainian officials signed a ratification protocol in Kiev Thursday, bringing into effect a trade agreement between the two countries, the Interfax news agency reported.

The agreement, ratified by Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Maidannik and Libyan Charge d'Affaires Muhamed Al-Bueishi, provides for cooperation in the health, agriculture, transport and industrial sectors, Al-Bueishi told the news agency.

The two countries plan to create an airline that would use Ukrainian aircraft and Libyan airfields.

Ukraine would also be able to use Libya as a bridge for goods to be transported to the African continent, Maidannik said.

Agreements on employment and on the protection of investments will soon be drafted, he added.

A bilateral cooperation commission is scheduled to discuss tourism, gas production concessions and the use of water at a meeting in Tripoli in autumn.

Maidannik stressed that the talks did not cover military defense cooperation – MOSCOW (AFP)
