Militants near the city of Bani Walid killed at least 12 Libyan soldiers at a checkpoint Saturday, according to Reuters. The heavy gunfire in the stronghold village of ousted leader Muammar Gadhafi, left at least five soldiers wounded as well.
Officials did not report who was responsible for the attacks. Rivals between tribes and clans, as well as Islamist groups, have caused clashes in the area with the absence of strong central government and thinly-spread security forces. The central government is still struggling to maintain order in the North African country since Gadhafi's overthrow and death two years ago.
