Comedian David Letterman of CBS’s The Late Show offered Alaska Governor Sarah Palin a lengthy apology yesterday for a joke he made about her daughter last week.  In his opening stand up comedy routine, Letterman joked that Palin’s daughter should be careful she doesn’t get “knocked up” by New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez during a visit to Yankee Stadium.

Days after a negative response from the media Letterman explained he did not know her 14 year old daughter was with the Governor at the baseball game, and insisted he was talking about her other daughter, an 18 year old.  Sarah Palin dismissed that apology, calling it a “weak, convenient excuse.”  Palin issued a statement, saying the joke “contributes to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others.”

Letterman addressed the controversy again on last night’s show saying, “I take full blame… I told a bad joke.  I told a joke that was beyond flawed… It’s not your fault that it was misunderstood, it’s my fault… so I would like to apologize.”
