At least three people were killed overnight in Lebanon’s northern port city of Tripoli during firefights between the neighborhoods of Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tabbeneh, state media reported Saturday.
The NNA said machine gun and sniper fire continued throughout the night Friday for a sixth straight day before escalating Saturday morning when fighters began using B10 and B7 launchers to fire rocket-propelled grenades.
The report added that security forces chased gunmen who drove around the city “shooting at random.”
AFP cited a security official who said 28 people have been killed in Tripoli since Sunday when the newest round of warfare erupted.
Thursday was the bloodiest day with 11 killed.
Conflict between Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tabbaneh dates back centuries, but intense periods of fighting have battered the neighborhoods since the Syrian civil war broke out over two years ago.
The fighting in Tripoli is closely linked to the war in Syria, with residents of Jabal Mohsen backing the government of Bashar al-Assad, while Bab al-Tabbaneh largely supports the rebels.
